Pallette Lake in Vilas County is one of those Northwoods spots that feels rustic, quiet, and wonderfully tucked away. You park along the forest road, stop at the DNR experimental‑waters station to check in, and then make the short quarter‑mile walk to the lake. Because Pallette is part of a research program, the staff gives you a quick rundown of the rules and asks you to count and measure your fish before returning your permit. It’s simple, friendly, and part of what keeps this lake so unique.

Once you reach the water, the quiet hits you. No crowds, no motors, just a still shoreline and clear water. We fished right from the bank and caught plenty of bass, enjoying the kind of peaceful day that feels harder to find lately.

As good as the shore fishing was, I kept thinking how perfect it would be to come back with a kayak. The carry‑in access makes it easy, and the lake’s quiet coves seem made for slow paddling and exploring.

Pallette Lake isn’t flashy — and that’s exactly why I loved it. A little walk, a little solitude, a little science, and a whole lot of bass. I’ll definitely be back, kayak in tow.
